Jiřina Šmejkalová se pedagogicky a výzkumně zabývá problematikou kulturní produkce a recepce v totalitních režimech, včetně jejích genderových aspektů, dějinami knižní kultury a historiografií knihy. Působila 25 let na mezinárodních výzkumných pracovištích a univerzitách v USA a Evropě, zejména pak 16 let ve Velké Británii (Durham, Lincoln), kde byla v r. 2007 habilitována v oboru kulturální a mediální studia. Vedla výzkumná centra (Centre for European Cultural Studies s Prof. A. Gray) a byla řešitelkou řady projektů (British Academy; Arts and Humanities Research Board, UK; COST Action), včetně současného GAČR (2022-2024) ve spolupráci s Ústavem pro českou literaturu AV ČR. Je zakládající členkou mezinárodní organizace SHARP, Society for the History of Authorship, Reading and Publishing a ediční rady jejího oborového periodika Book History. Z interdisciplinárního zázemí v sociologii kultury, literární vědě a mediálních studiích vychází také její publikační činnost, včetně klíčových monografií (Cold War Books in the ‘Other’ Europe, 2011; Kniha, 2001), antologie Co jsou dějiny knihy? (s L. Pořízkovou, 2021) a desítek časopiseckých studií i kapitol v knihách. Připravovala a moderovala panely a semináře např. na Světu knihy, London Book Fair nebo Velvyslanectví České republiky v Londýně. Patří také k průkopnickým badatelkám, které po roce 1989 rozvíjely genderovou a feministickou perspektivu, spolu s J. Šiklovou se podílela na založení neziskové organizace Gender Studies, o.p.s.
