On the basis of the accreditation in effect, every student of the Information Science PhD Programme is obliged to pass five examinations. These examinations are undertaken on the basis of the so-called Individual Study Plan (ISP), which is to be constructed at the very beginning of the studies with one’s supervisor. All of these examinations must be fulfilled by the end of the third year of studies. The supervisors should be part of the examination’s Examination Board.
The student chooses from one of these languages: English, German, French.
The examinations are conducted by the Faculty of Arts Language Center.
After consulting their supervisor, the student will choose between a philosophy examination or a Theory-Methodology Class.
Philosophy Examination conditions
The Philosophy Examination consists of an essay at the Department of Philosophy and Religion Studies at the Faculty of Arts. It is advised that the students who have already passed the Philosophy Examination also attend the Theory-Methodology Class.
After signing up for the Theory-Methodology Class, the student must participate in the class according to its scheduled organization.
The Theory-Methodology Class focuses on the field’s essential methodologies. It is a detailed course on the methods of qualitative and quantitative research within the field of information science. At the end of the class, students will deliver a seminar paper of about 10 pages which focuses on the application of attained knowledge from the seminar in their own dissertation project. The goal is to describe and analyze the dissertation thesis’ methodology, explaining and describing the research and pre-research advancements etc. The paper is submitted into the Moodle system. The credit is awarded only after one of the teachers has marked the paper as acceptable. In case that the paper is not deemed acceptable, it will be up to the student to rework and resubmit it.
The student may apply for the TMC after consulting their supervisor and receiving the invitation from UISK-PHD mailing list in Moodle.
The examination is conducted in the form of a discussion with a Commission on the topic of studied literature. The Commission evaluates the understanding of specific topics, relationships and connections between different fields, and the capacity for critical thinking. It primarily works with a prepared list of study materials (the list consists of basic and recommended reading), and it is up to the student to choose a narrow branch of the field associated with their specialization. The study literature is updated annually and confirmed by the Programme Board.
The student will choose two books from the list of basic texts and one from the list of recommended texts, depending on their specialization. The student informs the Doctoral Studies Coordinator a week in advance in regards to the chosen reading materials.
It is recommended that students undertake the Information Science Examination in the second year of their studies at the latest.
There will be one examination date every semester, or the student can apply for a personal date. The dates will be announced in the Study Information System.
The examination is currently centered around the field of Information Systems. The examination consists of a defence of a text on a topic chosen with the student’s supervisor and the examinator doc. PhD. Rudolf Vlasák (Rudolf.vlasak@ff.cuni.cz). It is required that the text is between 27000-36000 characters.
The written text is on the chosen topic of designing information systems. The text should consist of a theoretical introduction and a practical part, a designed information system project. It is required that the text is between 27000-36000 characters. It is required that the doctorand consults the text’s topic and intent with their supervisor and examinator before taking the examination. There will be an examination date announced at the end of every month. The dates will be announced in the doctoral programme mailing list (uisk-phd@lists.ff.cuni.cz) and in the ÚISK calendar. By delivering the text online the student automatically signs up for the examination. This means that one cannot take the examination without finalizing and uploading the text. The deadline for the text is always 4 weeks before the examination is to be held. Send the texts to uisk.phd@gmail.com, writing “IS Examination” + your surname into the email subject field, and the name of your supervisor into the email’s body. Depending on the applications, a time schedule will be created and sent three weeks ahead of the examination.
The examination lasts 30 minutes and is conducted in the form of an academic conversation on the chosen topic and delivered text. The examination is graded as “Passed” or “Failed”. A record will be made of the examination, signed by the Commission’s members and stamped by ÚISK. The original record will be stored at the departmental secretariat and a copy will be delivered to the Faculty of Arts’ Science Department. The doctorand will receive a confirmation of the examination’s results.
The doctorand is to deliver a text on a topic related to the aims of their dissertation between 27000-36000 characters. The topic of the text and the intent to take the examination on a given date is to be consulted ahead with one’s supervisor and examinator.
