Josef Šlerka is the Head of the New Media Studies program at the Institute of Information Studies and Librarianship at the Faculty of Arts, Charles University. Throughout his career, he has blended academic research with practical application. He has worked in internet startups Ataxo and Socialbakers, where he led research and development. After leaving the business sector, he became the director of the Foundation Fund for Independent Journalism, where he supported and advanced independent journalism. He currently collaborates as a data journalist for the investigative portal Investigace.cz.
He is a recognized expert on the issues of disinformation and conspiracy theories. His research primarily focuses on analyzing data from social networks and using it to understand human behavior. He was among the first proponents of digital humanities and is now exploring the potential uses of artificial intelligence in the humanities field. In 2014, he received the Personality of the Year award in the Křišťálová lupa poll. In 2023, he was part of a team that won the Slovak Journalism Award for mapping the Russian disinformation portal News Front. Josef Šlerka has also contributed to many research projects, including OPLZZ and KREAS, and is active in the Norwegian group THREAT-DEFUSER and the project OP JAK Beyond Security: The Role of Conflict in Resilience-Building. During the pandemic, he co-founded the Center for Modeling of Biological and Social Processes, focusing on the interdisciplinary application of modeling. In the past, he undertook academic stays at universities in Bremen and Ghent. |
